Scientists call it "forest bathing" because you actually immerse yourself with your body and soul between the trees and in the midst of their power and energy.
Have you ever thought about why a walk through a forest gives so much strength and energy? Is it really just the moment you give yourself to escape everyday life and stress? Or is it really the power of the trees that gives you this soothing "head rest"? It is by far much more. It's all about inhaling organic matter and oils that surround us in the forest.
Many scientists have investigated this phenomenon over the past 20 years and have come to the following conclusion:
They call it "forest bathing" because you actually immerse yourself with your body and soul between the trees and in the midst of their power and energy. This is due to the diverse biodiversity, which provides us with a great treasure trove of positive and healthy microbacteria, which are not only present in ourselves, but also enter the air from the trees and leaves, which we then breathe. Exposing ourselves to the green world in the forests promotes our physical and mental well-being. But what exactly are the mechanisms here?
Forest air
Forest air in particular is rich in oxygen, and pure oxygen is known to trigger a feeling of happiness in us. A walk in the forest lowers stress hormones, also strengthens the immune system and can also help to ward off viral bacteria and even tumor formation.
Scientists have found that there are three substances that have a positive effect on our breathing process and thus make us happier. The first is the healthy bacteria that positively influence our system. The second is the rich world of plants, which secrete very special oils that are extremely healthy for our blood. Only oxygen-rich blood is healthy blood. Thirdly, the negatively charged ions that are released into the air from the green leaves. All these processes help us to feel better, to recharge our batteries and to immerse ourselves in everyday life strengthened.
Because from birth we are surrounded not only by bad, but also by good bacteria. They can be found everywhere and especially in the air that we breathe in and out throughout our lives. Our entire body has to deal with them around the clock. And the more we move in realms that have all these components, the happier and healthier we not only feel, but also are.
These good bacteria are also located in the intestine, where we chop up our food, pull out the good substances and excrete the rest with the help of these bacteria. The world of plants also lives on these good bacteria and is thus able to kill destructive microorganisms.
In psychology, the positive relationship between nature and mental well-being has long been recognized. It is not only the tranquility that emanates from the forest; there are also these specific microbiological substances in the air that positively influence our brain and thus our psyche. Children, in particular, should be given more opportunities for forest walks, as the child's brain especially needs these specific substances found exclusively in the woods during its growth phase.
Particularly trees are capable of releasing a bacteria called "phytoncides." And it is exactly this bacteria that is beneficial for us humans when we take a walk in the forest. PhytoncidesThe word means: "eradicated by the plant itself." This specifically means that this bacteria prevents the tree from being eaten by insects and animals, and thus rotting. There are more than 5,000 volatile substances that protect plants from harmful bacteria, fungi, and insects. However, phytoncides work in a constant process, preventing the growth of the invading organisms.
Meanwhile, these phytoncides are also used in holistic medicine and especially in aromatherapy for us humans. This bacterium is mainly taken in through the respiratory tract. Researchers found that after a two-hour walk in the woods, the body benefits from this volatile substance for at least 7 days, which is only taken in through the respiratory tract. It is these special oils that are emitted by the trees that we then inhale. Blood tests have shown that the blood was richer in oxygen and more saturated than that of those who spent the whole day in the city. Walking in the woods thus promotes the production of three different anti-cancer proteins and the formation of unusually high amounts of natural killer cells, which are also known to detect and attack cancer cells.
But a walk in the forest offers much more. The play of light and shadow, the various sounds, the moment, and the opportunity to listen within oneself all promote health, and the forest should be seen much more as an island that one should visit more often. Respecting and conserving this precious nature should be important to all of us.

Scientists have identified a number of botanical substances that act like natural medicine.
Experts have little doubt that it is healthy to walk among spruces, beeches, and oaks. Many studies prove that spending time in nature is beneficial for both body and mind. After a stay in the forest, people typically feel refreshed, rested, and strengthened. The mind is clear again.
However, the healing effect goes much further. Researchers have discovered that the bodies of people who spend time in a forest produce more killer cells. These are the powerful defense units of the immune system that combat pathogens and potential tumor cells.
Terpenoids from coniferous trees are particularly effective.
Scientists attribute this effect mainly to a group of botanical aroma compounds that we inhale in the forest: terpenoids.
Several tens of thousands of these volatile substances are known, and they belong to those materials that have a particularly intense smell. They serve trees, among other things, as a kind of means of communication with each other, for example, to warn their kind against voracious insects.
Medically particularly effective are especially those terpenoids that conifers such as spruces, pines, and firs emit. Under laboratory conditions, scientists added terpenoids to cell cultures containing budding tumors — and the natural substances killed off the cancer cells. When the researchers fed terpenoids to animals suffering from cancer, their malignant tumors regressed.
Time in the forest increases the number of killer cells
In other experiments with animals, terpenoids even prevented cancer from breaking out at all. So far, the effect has been tested in relation to breast, lung, or colorectal cancer. How strong the healing power of trees is in humans is currently being researched. After all: Those who absorb forest atmosphere for a day show, according to a study, almost a 40 percent increase in killer cells in their blood — and this effect lasts for about a week. If someone spends two days in the forest, the number of their killer cells increases by as much as 100 percent, and it takes a whole month for the level to decrease again.
Therefore, from the researchers' perspective, a recommendation can already be given today: Everyone should spend at least two full days in the forest once a month. And soak up some terpenoids.

The article:
Anyone who goes into the forest feels it instinctively: forest is good for you. But why is that? Scientists all over the world are dealing with this question.
What is certain is that forest air contains 90 percent fewer dust particles than city air. And that it contains substances that have a positive effect on our health.
"Forests strengthen our immune system"
The Austrian biologist and author Mr. Clemens Arvay collects international research results on the effect of the forest on our health.
He is convinced: "The forest helps us against depression, psychological stress and burnout. But it also strengthens our immune system, can protect us from serious chronic diseases and even from heart attacks." (Devils Tower – And the gigantic trees did exist! (Videos link German))
Just the sight of a forest is beneficial
One of the earliest studies on the health effects of forests was published in 1984 in the scientific magazine 'Science.' According to this study, merely looking at trees has a measurably positive effect.
Patients who looked out at greenery from their hospital windows after surgery recovered faster than those who only saw a brick wall. Patients with a view of trees also required less pain medication.
A similar conclusion was reached by a large study conducted by environmental psychologist Marc Berman in 2015 at the University of Chicago: The fewer trees present in a residential area, the higher the risk for common lifestyle diseases such as cardiovascular weakness, hypertension, or diabetes (Forest Bathing: The Gentle Therapy for Body and Mind! (Video link (German))).
British researchers have also shown that walking in the forest elevates mood and reduces stress
The diverse sensory impressions, such as the chirping of birds and the smell of pine needles, stimulate the activity of the parasympathetic nervous system, according to Clemens Arvay. 'This is an important part of our nervous system that is responsible for recovery and regeneration down to the cellular level.'
It is known that in the hectic city life, the antagonist of the parasympathetic system, the sympathetic system, is very active. 'And that’s why we modern humans particularly need this forest as a counterbalance.' (Intensive forest walks increase the number of cancer-fighting cells in the body (Videos link (German)))
Does forest air also protect against cancer?
During a walk in the forest, we inhale substances that plants use to exchange messages with each other – known as terpenes. They strengthen our immune system. For a study by Nippon Medical School in Tokyo, researchers accommodated twelve test subjects in a hotel. One half had their breathing air at night enriched with a mixture of forest air.
The next day, the blood samples from these participants showed a significantly higher number and activity of the body's own killer cells. For study leader Professor Qing Li, this is a groundbreaking finding. 'My experiment has shown that terpenes stimulate immune cells like natural killer cells, which enhances the effect of immune function,' he says.
The pioneer of forest medicine hopes that with the power of trees, it may even be possible to prevent cancer. "Perhaps in the future, doctors will prescribe the forest as medicine," he says (Effective forest therapy – terpenes in forest air strengthen the immune system link (German)).
"Forest bathing" as preventive health care
In Japan, visits to the forest have been part of preventive health care for years. The term "Shinrin-yoku" translates to "forest bathing" and is a Japanese tradition. In 2012, a dedicated research branch for "forest medicine" was even established at Japanese universities.
"Trees have a rich social life"
In Germany, forester and bestselling author Peter Wohlleben studies the forest and its impact on humans. For him, trees are more than just suppliers of wood and oxygen: "In reality, trees are fascinating living beings, with a rich social life. There is a lot going on that we cannot see so easily because trees are simply so slow." ("Shinrin-yoku" – Doctor Forest link)
Do trees have feelings?
According to Wohlleben, trees have a memory and feelings. They live in family groups, form friendships, and exchange messages with each other, for example through scents that contain terpenes.
Additionally, trees could send electrical information through their roots and even warn each other about dangers such as harmful insects (a tree stump is artificially kept alive by other trees - link).
Getting to know and protect the forest
Wohlleben's statements are popular, but they face criticism from scientists because they believe the assumptions are not very scientific. However, the forester is sure that the forest, due to its special climate, acts like a kind of medicine. 'Blood pressure decreases, one becomes more relaxed, especially if it's an intact forest.'
His appeal: People should get to know the forest better and protect it. After all, they need it urgently – also for their health.

Fresh forest air: healing through a walk in the forest
https://www.sn.at/leben/lifestyle/frische-waldluft-heilung-durch-einen-waldspaziergang-900826Doctors have preached since ancient times "exercise and fresh air" as medicine, as a short walk in the forest can work true wonders. A walk in the forest is perfect for recharging new energy.
Fresh air has been used as a remedy since early on.
Could it be that fresh air as therapy is simply too easy and at least as long as no disease symptoms have occurred, it "only" costs time? That would be fatal. Because fresh air, especially forest air, is healthy and shows measurable results. This is sufficiently proven today by comprehensive studies.
Healers, medical practitioners, and doctors have long preached to their adult patients that fresh air is the perfect medicine for individual health. However, the topics of air and movement are simply not becoming more popular. The physician Hippocrates, who lived in the fifth century BC, still invoked Apollo in the hope that his Greeks suffering from pain and aging ailments would receive enough room for movement and opportunities to breathe to remain young and healthy for as long as possible. In the medical history throughout all recorded ages and nations, there are countless similar appeals from doctors who could share their experiences with fresh air and movement.
Not every air is fresh
We have arrived today in the age of globalization and international studies. In a time where traditional natural healing and modern medical research are slowly, but surely, coming closer together. In the last two decades, there have been some groundbreaking comprehensive study results that at least diminish the banality of the myth 'fresh air & movement => health.'
Studies from recent years warn: on one hand, nothing beats walking, walking fast, jogging, exploring, or practicing contrast baths outdoors in nature in fresh air. On the other hand, especially in Austria, there is explicit warning about fine dust pollution, which is often greater here than in industrial centers in the USA. Therefore: jogging in the city or walking near heavily frequented streets may be good for the muscles, but the oxygen balance in the body benefits little from it. That's why a walk in the woods is much healthier than in the city.
The forest walk proves to be a remedy
Out of the city and into nature. All studies agree that the fresh forest air can heal numerous diseases or symptoms in humans. A walk in the woods sometimes works true wonders; one can breathe deeply, enjoy the pleasant coolness, and take the majestic trees as an example of serenity. At the same time, a walk in the woods is not only healthy but also a boon for body and mind. Therefore, one should take their time during a forest walk and fully enjoy nature.
The health and recovery effect of a forest walk is higher and more lasting than a visit to a gym, a research team from the Medical University of Vienna has found. The scientists summarized all findings on the health effects of forest landscapes from 1993 to 2013. Further results: Regular forest walks strengthen regenerative powers and the immune system, improve sleep quality, and have a harmonizing effect on the nervous and cardiovascular systems. Stress, particularly the stress hormone cortisol, is reduced and mood improves.
High Calorie Consumption While Walking
Many underestimate the walk in the fresh air with regard to calorie consumption. For example, a person weighing 80 kilograms burns about 240 kilocalories while walking a distance of four kilometers in one hour. If he were to jog the same distance in 30 minutes, he would burn approximately 320 kilocalories. Therefore, the calorie consumption is almost the same.
Terpenes strengthen the immune system
Austria has many forests; however, most of them are not natural forests, that is, not ancient forests, but are planted for the purpose of timber production. Nevertheless, they serve as suppliers of purified air and numerous strengthening 'medicines' that strengthen the body instead of burdening it, especially when exploring along walking paths. There are many substances, but the most important and most commonly researched so far are called terpenes.
These terpenes seem to exert a significant effect on the immune system. They activate the body's own killer cells, which are necessary to combat diseases. The Graz scientist and author Clemens Arvay writes: "Even a single day in a forest area increases the number of our natural killer cells in the blood by almost 40 percent." For Arvay, the forest is a place where communication occurs. Roots, trunks, leaves, mushrooms, needles - here, substances and sounds that are not perceptible to humans are emitted, creating a unique environment. Thus, "forest bathing" is now considered an established remedy and a method of disease prevention in Japan, for example. In numerous investigations and studies, environmental immunologist Mr. Qing Li from the Nippon Medical School in Tokyo has demonstrated that terpenes can be effectively used against depression, anxiety, and cardiovascular diseases.

Terpenes are hydrocarbon compounds that determine the unique aroma of plants, humans, and animals
Peppermint, lemongrass, eucalyptus, thyme, or the lemon tree – everyone should know the soothing scent of these plants, and most will find it very pleasant. Anyone who has come into contact with hemp or cannabis may have unconsciously been reminded of this scent. This is due to terpenes, as they are extracted from these numerous plant species. Terpenes are volatile organic substances that can be classified into different categories due to their diverse structural variants. Each one has a particular inherent smell, and this is distinctive.
The responsible factors are the terpenes, as they are extracted from these numerous plant species. Terpenes are volatile, organic substances that can be categorized into different classifications due to their diverse structural variants. Each one has its own distinct scent, which is unmistakable.
The effectiveness of the terpenes is just as unmistakable
The different compounds of the terpenes thus not only have an effect on their smell. Each form reacts differently to our bodies and can be of great benefit to us in one way or another. As a rule, however, this goes unnoticed because the dose is correspondingly small. Nevertheless, a healthy diet certainly benefits our general well-being.
However, in the case of more severe complaints or health problems, the healing effects of the terpenes can be positively enhanced. In connection with something like CBD, such a positive side effect of the terpenes contained is now known and is also used accordingly. Since the terpenes are not psychoactive in the slightest, they do not make you "high" and are completely harmless.
What exactly are terpenes?
In a chemical sense, terpenes are hydrocarbon compounds. These organic and aromatic substances are found in numerous plants. Cannabis contains a particularly large number of terpenes. The therapeutic effect of these hydrocarbons is hardly negligible in medicine. Terpenes are often used in the treatment of cancer, addiction, pain, infections, or depression. Cannabis contains a lot of terpenes, with myrcene, limonene, and pinene being the most important types.
What are terpenoids?
Terpenoids belong to a class of compounds that occur in natural substances. Structurally, they can be compared to isoprene. The probably largest and most noticeable difference is that they can be divided into different groups. Terpenes are pure hydrocarbons.
Terpenes
Cannabis contains particularly many different terpenes.
What types of terpenes are found in cannabis?
As mentioned previously, there are about 200 different terpenes present in the cannabis plant. Here are some examples:
Myrcene
This is a terpene that has a particularly high concentration in the cannabis plant. Myrcene is often and frequently used for the treatment of inflammation or pain. In a good mixture with THC, myrcene can achieve a relaxing effect. Myrcene is found in mango, hops, lemongrass, bay leaves, and thyme.
Limonene
In cannabis, limonene is the second most common terpene. It is also found in citrus peels. Due to its pleasant fragrance, it is often used as an antidepressant. Another benefit is that this terpene is said to have antibacterial properties. It occurs in citrus fruits and is often used in cancer therapy.
Pinene
This terpene is responsible for the pine scent. Pinene is known as an anti-inflammatory and a stimulant. It is found in trees, rosemary, and sage.
Linalool
This terpene occurs in lavender and has a sweet, lemony scent. It helps with sleep disorders and depression. Very popular in aromatherapy.
In simple terms: terpenes are secondary compounds found in many different plants. They are also responsible for the aroma and taste of plants. Terpenes have been extracted and used for various purposes since ancient times.
The accompanying effect: Terpenes and CBD work excellently together!
It is estimated that hemp contains around 120 different terpenes.
Therefore, it is somewhat difficult to systematically study all possible effects and mechanisms and the way they harmonize with each other.
Furthermore, it has been proven that the terpenes in hemp affect the CB2 receptors within our bodies, and these are the same receptors that CBD also impacts. The result is an enhanced, modified effect.
